Diponegoro is the eldest son of Hamengkubuwana III, a king of Mataram in Yogyakarta. Born on November 11, 1785 in Yogyakarta from a garwa ampeyan (concubine) named R.A. Mangkarawati, an ampeyan garwa (non-consort wife) from Pacitan. Prince Diponegoro named small Raden Mas Mustahar, [citation needed] and then renamed by Hamengkubuwono II in 1805 to Bendoro Raden Mas Ontowiryo


Diponegoro is not a real name. The prince derives his name from Sanskrit, ie dipa which means 'light' and nagara which means 'state'. In its entirety its name means 'the light of the country' and is a noble title in the southern part of the Keraton of Central Java. The prince explained it to the German officer, Justus Heinrich Knoerle, during his journey to Manado (May 3-June 12, 1830).

Prince Diponegoro has seven official wives during his life as well as his undocumented concubines. Of all his companions, based on historical records, he has at least 17 children. Seven of his sons (six men and one woman) were born during Diponegoro in exile in Manado (1830-1833) and Makassar (1833-1855).

All except Raden Mas Sarkumo (1834-1849), were buried in the Diponegoro family cemetery in Kampung Melayu, Makassar. There are now thousands of Diponegoro descendants scattered throughout Indonesia with major concentrations in Ambon (Maluku), Makassar, Banyumas, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, Bogor, and Jakarta.
